The Safe Delivery App was thoroughly tested in a randomized controlled trial in Ethiopia before launch. This was to ensure that the App improves the skills and knowledge of skilled birth attendants - and, hence, that it can contribute to improve maternal and newborn health.
The mHealth Competency Center and our academic partners will continue to evaluate and conduct research on the usage of the App to ensure that learnings and best practice is captured and disseminated to the broader mHealth and maternal health community.

Randomized controlled trial in Ethiopia
The RCT in Ethiopia showed a remarkable increase in the skills and knowledge of the health workers using the App for a 6 and 12 month period of time. The health workers also expressed an increased confidence level as well as a boost in trust and acknowledgement from their community.

Maternal health project in Guinea
The Safe Delivery App was introduced to midwives from 34 health facilities in Guinea in partnership with Danish Red Cross and Guinea Red Cross. Results show positive increases in clinical knowledge and self-confidence in the management of complications during pregnancy and child birth.

Educational programs in Kenya
In Kenya, the NGO Amref and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine are using the App in pre-service settings to train nurses and midwives. In addition, LSTM has carried out a study to assess the feasibility of the App in Kenya, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
