Maternity Foundation launches new and improved Infection Prevention module in Safe Delivery App
Maternity Foundation has just launched an updated version of their Infection Prevention module within their global tool, the Safe Delivery App.
The Safe Delivery App is a job aid, learning and training tool for midwives and other healthcare professionals in fragile and remote settings, supporting them in ensuring safer births for women and babies. So far, the App and the accompanying programme has reached more than 455,000 healthcare professionals worldwide.
The updated infection module includes a range of topics such as injection safety, antibiotic prophylaxis, hand hygiene, and respiratory infections, all up to date with current WHO guidelines.
The Safe Delivery App is continually updated to adapt to user needs. Accordingly, the COVID-19 module has been terminated and all relevant information from this module is now appropriately relocated in the updated Infection Prevention module.
According to the Pan American Health Organization, it is estimated that for every 1,000 women giving birth, 11 will suffer from severe organ dysfunction or worse, death, due to infection.
However, these mortalities can be prevented when proper medical care and interventions are practiced by midwives and other healthcare professionals.
“With the updated Infection Prevention module, we can even better support midwives in implementing simple, yet vital, measures that prevent infection and ultimately save lives of mothers and babies”, says Maternity Foundation CEO, Anna Frellsen.
The updated Infection Prevention Module is available in the Global English version of the Safe Delivery App. Overall, the app comes in 5 global versions based on WHO guidelines (English, French, Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese) and almost 40 language versions, adapted to national contexts and needs.
More on the Safe Delivery App
The Safe Delivery App is an evidence-based job aid, learning and training tool for midwives and other healthcare professionals in low-resource settings. It provides essential guidance on management of basic emergency obstetric and newborn care.
It is free and once downloaded, it works offline, meaning it can reach midwives anywhere, anytime and continuously enhance their knowledge and skills and ultimately the quality of care that they provide for the communities they serve.
In recent years, the App has been enhanced with additional modules focusing on preventive services including perinatal mental health, modern contraception, antenatal care and postnatal care.
Among other features, the App contains simple, animated instruction videos, descriptions of practical procedures, and drug lists in addition to having a MyLearning platform that allows for competency-based learning and training.
