About Maternity Foundation

Every other minute, a woman dies of causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. Every seventh second, a newborn suffers the same fate. Most deaths happen in poor and fragile settings, but the majority can be prevented if the women receive quality care from a skilled healthcare professional.

Maternity Foundation is dedicated to ensuring safer births for women and newborns worldwide. Through innovative learning programmes and life-saving digital health solutions like the Safe Delivery App, we empower healthcare professionals in low-resource areas, enhancing midwifery knowledge and skills.

For each woman lost, 20 to 30 others suffer preventable injuries, infections, or disabilities stemming from pregnancy or childbirth. By strengthening midwifery expertise, we strive to eradicate preventable maternal morbidity and harm.

Though rooted in Denmark, Maternity Foundation operates globally in maternal and newborn health, digital solutions, and educational programmes. Our initiatives span both humanitarian and developmental contexts.

Since our beginning as a Danish NGO in western Ethiopia in 2005, we have expanded to establish offices in Ethiopia, India, and Denmark. Today, our engagements extend across Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

By the close of 2023, we had reached  400,000 healthcare workers in low and middle-income countries, spanning over 70 nations. Collaborating with esteemed partners such as UNFPA, UNICEF, Ministries of Health, Plan International, Red Cross, and Save the Children, we are supported by influential organisations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Merck/MSD for Mothers, Novo Nordisk Foundation, World Diabetes Foundation, and Ole Kirk’s Fond.

Together, we work from a shared vision that it should not cost life to give life.
